The "what even is this thing" explanation.
AI is a computer tool that helps with thinking tasks, like writing, explaining things, or organizing information. It is like having a very fast assistant.
It doesn't have feelings. It doesn't "know" things on its own. It just reads a lot of information and helps put answers together.
You can talk to it by typing and asking it questions.
There are different types of AI that do different things. Companies use AI to draft emails, analyze data, create images, build websites, and more.
But when most people talk about AI today β they mean the websites and apps you go to and talk with AI.
On this website, when we talk about AI, that's mostly what we mean: chat tools like ChatGPT that you can talk to and get stuff done.
You might have already used it without knowing!
Those company chat boxes are built to answer specific questions β and yeah, they're frustrating.
The AI tools we're talking about are different. You can ask them anything and they're generally smarter and more helpful.
Thousands! But you don't need to learn them all. To start, we recommend trying some of the most popular free AI chat tools like:
Different AIs have different specialties. If you ask the same question to 3 different AIs, you'll get slightly different answers β like asking 3 different people.
They're trained differently with different settings and rules. Try a few and see which one you like best!
Go to one of the main chat tools. For instance, go try one of the three popular tools we mentioned earlier like Chatgpt, Gemini, and Claude. You'll see a chat box. Type a question and get answers in real time.
Think of it like talking to a friend. π¬
Yes! But it won't answer harmful questions. And be cautious about sharing very personal info like health data or sensitive details. Only use well-known AI tools from trusted companies. Avoid random links or pop-ups that claim to be βAI.β If a site looks strange, asks for money right away, or feels off β donβt use it.
The companies work hard to keep it safe, but good practice is to be cautious anywhere on the internet. AI can be helpful, but it isnβt perfect. Always double-check important information.
Here are some fun things to try:
Just talk normally. Ask it questions. Follow up on anything you don't understand. You don't need to use special words. The more specific the question, the better the answer. Remember this is a tool you can chat with, different that surfing the web and having to hunt for information. Using AI is more like talking to a helpful assistant than searching the internet.
Good: "Whatβs going on?"
Even better: "Summarize todayβs finance news in simple, neutral language."
If confused: "That was too complicated. Try again."
You can have a conversation β go back and forth, ask follow-ups, tell it to dig deeper or simplify.
AI is trained on data from websites and the internet. It does its best to give right answers, but it can make mistakes.
It's not a real person β it's a very smart tool. Be careful trusting it 100%, like anything you read online. But it's a great way to get good info fast.
AI can do a lot β make pictures, videos, write stories, do tasks. But you don't have to do all that.
You can just talk to it and use it to get information. Think of it like a smart friend or researcher who can look into things you want to learn about.
We at buildwithjamie love AI as a learning tool. π
By doing. Practice talking to it. You'll see what it's good at and bad at. And check out the resources on this site for more tips and tricks.
Ask better questions. The questions you ask AI are called prompts. More detailed = better answers.
We have tips and tools on this site to help you build good prompts and copy/paste prompts to use. But you can also just go ask a simple question right now. Prompts are just a way to level up.
Just a fancy word for a question.
You got it! Go to one of the AI chat websites and try it. When you want to learn more, come back to this website and go deeper with my other trainings on prompt tips, memory limitations, and how to get more from AI.
I'm Jamie, and I love AI! I use AI it to build websites (this one was built with AI help) and for learning, researching, brainstorming, data analysis, and other tasks. I like how easy it makes it to research interesting topics and learn new things.
I also blog about ideas for using AI better and trends in business and AI.
Fair question. People worry AI can take jobs. It uses data and energy. People worry about sharing personal info with it. There are real concerns β I blog about this.
But I personally think the benefits outweigh the bad. And AI isn't going away, so I want to learn more and make it easier for others to use it. That's why I made this site.
Suggest recipes with what you have β’ Adjust recipes for fewer people β’ Help plan meals
Help plan trips β’ Explain travel steps β’ Create packing lists
Answer random questions β’ Explain history or hobbies β’ Help with crossword clues β’ Write poems or stories
AI is great at explaining confusing topics in plain language.
Now that you know the basics, level up with prompts, tips, and training.
A note from Jamie: This is my personal take on AI, based on my experience using it a lot. I'm not a technical expert β just someone who wants to help make AI less confusing. This is general information, not professional advice. Take it lightly, have fun, and go try things! π
